Here is my review of the American breakfasts I have been enticed with this week. Even though I am in the South for the week (in Charleston, SC), the only southern dish I had for breakfast was grits, but wait until my post about dinner and you'll see more southern food, I promise!
You just can't go wrong with fresh baked biscuits first thing. I love them with soft butter and a little grape jelly. Yummy! The ones I had in Charleston at the Daniel Island Club are definitely the best biscuits I have ever tasted.
Here is the version with grits instead of potatoes. I was raised on cornmeal more or less (remember I am Romanian), so learning to love grits was tough! The south knows how to cook their grits, though, and this one was flawless. Can't have grits without Cheddar cheese, though. Another yummy meal indeed!
Since no one's on a diet (actually... nevermind!), some biscuits and gravy are a must-have! I honestly crave this dish every now and then, and I won't stop until I get it. It helps that you can find it at any restaurant that serves breakfast. It's pretty heavy, but I give in to this guilty pleasure sometimes. Daniel Island Club knocked this dish out of the park.
Sausage, egg and cheese biscuit sandwich reminds me of a McMuffin, but it tastes 100 times better anywhere other than McDonalds. This is my favorite breakfast in a rush because I can eat it to the bus stop (I fry the egg hard on those occasions so I don't get egg yolk down my forearm). Yew.. could you imagine that?!
Now the omelet is the way to go if you want to have a somewhat healthy breakfast. You can substitute the egg for only egg whites (I wouldn't sacrifice that much, though) and add all kinds of healthy stuff to it like veggies and spinach. Notice the grits in the back! We're in the South! :-)
My all time favorite breakfasts are sweet, I admit! I didn't get to have sweets for breakfast while I was growing up in Romania, so finding this to be acceptable in the US made me VERY happy. This week I had a fancy french toast version with almond-praline butter. Oh my! The french toast was perfectly crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I can't say a bad word about this meal, but then again... I love food so much, I rarely say bad stuff about any food. Either way... Americans know why French Toast is such a popular breakfast dish. I wonder if the French have it as often? Anyone know?
Enough food talk for today. Will come back with reviews of lunch and dinner very soon! Till then, you can leave me messages/comments on the blog, on Facebook (search for "Traveler Through Life") or at lauraanamariahurjui@gmail.com
